Today was a nice day. I took it off from work and enjoyed the day to myself. Of course I couldn’t just sit on the couch and do nothing, although I did that later on after I finished up these cute little skirts. I was browsing Pinterest and saw a pattern for a quick knit skirt and decided that it would be perfect for me to try out since working with knits are on the goal list for this year. Well, I had been really concerned about working with knits that I put it off for a long time. I found a few blogs that helped me quite a bit to get ready (Prudent Baby and One Little Minute Blog).
It turns out that sewing with knits is ridiculously easy. I thought my machine was going to eat up the material, but it did nothing even close to that. I did try with a scrap first just using a straight stitch and then that made me remember the articles that I was supposed to use the stretch stitch. I switched over and then, Bam! Perfect stitches. I also used a ballpoint/jersey needle and I could tell that made a bit of a difference too because it was popping/breaking the threads in the fabric.
The skirts came out pretty nicely. I actually just ended up taking our measurements and then winging the pattern myself. For JJ’s skirt I only had one piece of fabric that I made into a tube and then sewed some elastic into a waistband. After that I hemmed the bottom. Pretty easy. For mine, I had to take a few tries before I got it completely right. My skirt was two pieces of fabric sewn at the sides, then I sewed in the elastic for the wasteband, then hemmed the bottom. It probably took me about an hour and a half to make both of the skirts.
The ONLY bad part of sewing these up are that I now want to make even more. If/when I do, I will be using some lighter weight knit fabric. The stuff I got here (from Joann’s) is probably a bit heavier than I would like for summer. It will be great for fall and winter though. Now I just need to lose more weight. 🙂
