For the past few weeks I have been looking at making myself a dress out of the Washi Dress pattern from Made By Rae. I bought the pattern and read through it, I swear, four times at least. I don’t make very many clothes for myself (in fact only one other thing that I can think of) so I’m trying to take it as seriously as I can because I tend to rush things. I also NEVER wear dresses, but when I saw this pattern and how easy it looked I thought I would give it a shot.
It seems like it’s a simple A-line style dress with some pleats in the front and some shirred elastic in the back. The shirring is what I am REALLY nervous about because I’ve never done it before, let alone have anything other than thread in my bobbin. I bought four spools of it so I could practice before I did it to make sure I was really comfortable before trying it on the actual material.
I started cutting out the pattern this weekend. First you have to print out the pattern on 8.5″ x 11″ paper and then tape them all together. Once you do that you have this giant page of pieces to cut out. Luckily there weren’t that many and most of them were straight lines so cutting was pretty easy. The main question that I have floating around in my head is do I do the facings, or the lining for the dress. She has some greats examples of doing it both ways. I think I might try doing the facings on the first one, then try the lining on the second and see how they both turn out.
I’m so excited to make this dress that I have actually purchased three different materials for myself thinking that if I really like the first one then others will follow. Even if I end up not liking it I can at least make something for JJ out of them.
